EXCELNUMBER FORMAT

    NUMBER FORMATTING helps you present your data in a more readable and meaningful way
  1. General Format:
    • The default format in Excel, which displays numbers as they are entered.
    • No special formatting is applied.
    • Example: 12345.6789
  2. Number Format:
    • Displays numbers with commas as thousands separators and two decimal places.
    • Example: 12,345.68
    • To apply the Number format, select the cell(s) and use the “Number” format dropdown in the Ribbon’s “Number” group.
  3. Currency Format:
    • Displays numbers with a currency symbol (e.g., $) and two decimal places.
    • Example: $12,345.68
    • To apply the Currency format, select the cell(s) and use the “Currency” format dropdown in the “Number” group.
  4. Percentage Format:
    • Displays numbers as percentages with a percentage symbol (%).
    • Example: 50%
    • To apply the Percentage format, select the cell(s) and use the “Percentage” format dropdown in the “Number” group.
  5. Date Format:
    • Formats numbers as dates. You can choose from various date formats, such as “Short Date” (e.g., 9/12/2023) or “Long Date” (e.g., Monday, September 12, 2023).
    • To apply a date format, select the cell(s), right-click, choose “Format Cells,” and then select the desired date format in the “Number” tab of the Format Cells dialog box.
  6. Time Format:
    • Formats numbers as times of the day. You can choose from various time formats, such as “Short Time” (e.g., 2:30 PM) or “Long Time” (e.g., 2:30:15 PM).
    • To apply a time format, select the cell(s), right-click, choose “Format Cells,” and then select the desired time format in the “Number” tab of the Format Cells dialog box.
  7. Scientific Format:
    • Displays numbers in scientific notation (exponential form) with a specified number of decimal places.
    • Example: 1.23E+04
    • To apply the Scientific format, select the cell(s) and use the “Scientific” format dropdown in the “Number” group.
  8. Custom Format:
    • Allows you to create your own number format using custom codes.
    • For example, you can use custom formats to display numbers as fractions or to add text alongside numbers.
    • To create a custom number format, select the cell(s), right-click, choose “Format Cells,” and then select the “Number” tab. Enter your custom format code in the “Custom” category.
  9. Special Formats:
    • Excel provides additional special number formats for things like ZIP codes, phone numbers, and Social Security numbers. These can be found in the “Special” category when formatting cells.
To apply number formatting in Excel, select the cell(s) you want to format, right-click, choose “Format Cells,” and then select the desired number format from the “Number” tab of the Format Cells dialog box. You can also use the Number format dropdown in the Ribbon’s “Number” group for quick access to common formats.
